Textured Twists Replaced My Smooth Updos
Working with what I have instead of against it
Working with what I have instead of against it
Every updo tutorial I watched started with perfectly straightened hair. I would spend 20 minutes flat-ironing before attempting any style. By mid-afternoon, my natural wave would return and the whole thing would sag.
I blamed my hair type. It is fine but dense, with a natural bend that fights sleekness. Products that promised hold made everything stiff and crunchy. I thought I needed to control the texture to look polished.
I saw a hairstylist on social media create an updo on unwashed, wavy hair. She deliberately kept the bends and kinks visible. She twisted sections without smoothing them, letting the texture show through. The final look had dimension and stayed in place because the texture created natural grip.
I tried it the next morning using hair from the day before. I twisted four sections loosely, pinned them in a crisscross pattern at my crown, and left face-framing pieces slightly messy.
The style held for 11 hours without touch-ups. The texture prevented slipping better than any product I had used. My morning routine dropped from 35 minutes to 12.
I have not straightened my hair before an updo in six weeks. The styles look more current and require less maintenance throughout the day.
Building this skill level required consistent effort, willingness to make mistakes, and patience with the learning curve. The results came from showing up regularly, not from quick wins or shortcuts.
